Bass Lessons For Beginners

Before you actually start the steps to learn to play the bass guitar, you should learn a few key fundamentals to proper bass guitar playing

Holding The Bass
Use a 2 to 3 inch wide strap for comfort for both standing and sitting. Try to adjust your bass so that the bridge is around waist height. It should be at the same position when sitting to provide consitency when practicing. Avoid hunching over or leaning back as you play. Your bass should be supported by the strap alone, never use your hands. Keep the neck pointed up about 25 to 30 degrees from the floor to allow easier fretting.

Relaxed Posture:
Save energy by maintaining a relaxed posture and a relaxed left hand. You do not need to apply any more pressure than is required to produce a nice, clear sound. You are not accomplishing anything extra if you apply more pressure than needed. In fact, it can lead to fatigue and even injury.

Avoid Injury:
Keep your wrist as straight as you can, yet relaxed to avoid serious injury such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Your finger tips will get sore and develop calluses. This is normal when you are first starting out. If you experience other symptoms like shooting pains down your arms, then take a break from playing. Listen to your body and do not over do it.

Starting out with a good beginner electric guitar package

Filed under: Digital Music — admin at 5:15 pm on Monday, June 27, 2011

Learning to play the guitar is always a good idea. Whatever genre you like, you can definitely learn it. However, you should understand that every guitar playing style or genre cannot be played without first knowing the basic chords and/or notes and how they are correctly played. Now, before taking up guitar lessons or doing the teaching on your own, you must first purchase your own guitar. Now, you should pick between learning with an acoustic guitar or with an electric guitar. It's all really up to you. However, it is highly recommended to get a beginner electric guitar package to learn because they are easier on the fingers than acoustic guitars.

Now, why an electric guitar? An electric guitar is more "touch sensitive" which means that it can produce the desired sound with a minimal amount of pressure. Acoustic guitars are normally uneasy on the fingers especially for a beginner because it requires a greater amount of pressure on the strings to produce the desired sound. Furthermore, it can be really hurtful on the fingers. If you press lightly, you will just hear a faint ring. Also, an acoustic guitar has a wider neck than an electric guitar. This means that you will have to extend those fingers to reach those chords compared to an electric guitar.

Typically, a beginner electric guitar package contains an electric guitar, an amp, and sometimes the connecting cable. These are basically the essentials of an electric guitar. Other accessories or items like straps and guitar effects may be bought at a later time. Since you are still in the learning stage, you will not need an expensive guitar yet. A good electric guitar will suffice for beginners like you.

Keeping your guitar in great shape every time you use it will improve your skills. Make sure to learn tuning your guitar. There are many ways to tune a guitar. You can use any other instrument to get the "E" note in order to get to the EADGBF notes on your strings. To make it easy, you could also purchase an electric guitar tuner which doesn't really cost that much. Making sure that your guitar is perfectly tuned will expedite your learning curve.

In learning how to play, you should not expect it to be a walk in the park, a piece of cake, or whatever you want to call it. In other words, it is hard. It will take a gargantuan amount of patience, hard work and perseverance. There might also come a time when you will finally get tired of it. This is one of the reasons why it is not a good idea to buy an expensive guitar at first. However, once you get to play for about six months or so, things would get better and smoother for you.

Learning to play the guitar has so many advantages. In fact, it is considered to be an investment for a lifetime. Playing the guitar will surely wake up the musician in you and will certainly impress a lot of people especially your friends and loved ones. Now imagine yourself composing beautiful songs for your girlfriend/boyfriend or rocking up the stage with your burning guitar solo. Great isn't it? Now make that a reality and get that beginner electric guitar package to get you started now!
